BENIN TOURS

 

 

SOUTHERN BENIN TOUR (BE-01)

Benin is very varied between splendid landscapes and various cultures. The dimension with its broad fine sand beaches strewn with coconuts, bordered on the lagoons of the lake cities. The plates with ist raised savanna occupant the interior of the country.
The far North, the chain of will Atacora (climax: 658m) will make you travel in the mystical universe of the Somba. These valiant people which knew to keep his culture jealously. These houses in the shapes of forts, will make you discover the architectural genius of these men. Benin is famous for its great religions as the voodoo.
The kingdom of Abomey, the road of slaves, the temple of crowned pythons amongst other ingredients which make the celebrity of this country.


Day 1:
Arrival and installation in the hotel in Awale Plage in Grand-Popo. Tired from the trip, you will probably be happy to relax on the beach near the traditional fishermen village, while a delicious meal is being prepared for you. Lunch and dinner in Hotel Awalé Plage.

Day 2:
After breakfast at Hotel Awalé plage followed by a small resting time at the swimming pool, you will be driven to Possotomé, a village famous for its mineral and thermal water source. Installation and lunch in Gîte de Possotomé.In the afternoon, you will have a complete immersion in “traditions voodoo culture” during this tour where you’ll taste, first of all, the local alcohol Sodabi. The local guide will tell you about divinities that protect the village from bad spirits. It is 3 hours walking along the lake and the sacred forest to discover the voodoo culture, its rituals and significances; while learning about plants secrets you will visit the fishers’ village. Dinner at Gîte de Possotomé.

Day 3
After an earlier breakfast, you will start the “water divinities” tour. From your dugout, you will observe fishermen casting their nets and will discover their specific techniques. You will be enchanted by the Avlékété voodoo, where various species of birds can be seen. This treasure of nature is also the place where various “voodoo” rituals and secret take place. You will enjoy the original meals from “Chez Préfet”, especially the tasty traditional fish receipt “Dakouin” and the home-made juices. Trip to Abomey. The distance from Possotomé to Abomey being a bit long (2,30 hours driving approximately), you will spend the morning in car. Be sure, you won’t regret it…the landscapes of the region and its forests are beautiful to watch passing by! Dinner at Hotel Chez Monique.

Day 4
In the hotel Chez Monique, in a beautifully decorated garden with objects made by local artists who have their working site near the restaurant. Then, you will enter the world of the Kings of Dahomey in the Historical Museum of Abomey. Here, you will see thrones built on human skulls, paintings of impressive amazone warriors, jewels of the queens, the place where King Glélé and his wives were buried… Dinner and night in the hotel Chez Monique.

Day 5
After breakfast, after 3 hours driving by road and 30 mn canoeing you will arrive at Ganvié city. Ganvié is a traditional fishing village made of thatched bamboo houses perched on stilts over a lake. Visitors here travel by motor boat, or pirogues (small wooden boats), which are poled through the lagoon by local guides and can view the daily life of the town while aboard the pirogues. Women sell fish, fruits and vegetables from the pirogues; or one can see the men returning in boats laden with nets filled with the day’s catch. Night in Hotel Assouka.

Day 6:
After breakfast, driving to OuidahYou will visit the Historical Museum of Ouidah, where you will learn about the relations between the colonisers and the kings of Dahomey (previous denomination of Benin), the conditions of transport in the slave ships and how the slaves managed to continue practising their voodoo culture far away from their native country. You will start a trip full of emotions. All along the “Road of slaves”, you will be told the different steps from the slaves’ journey: sold on the marketplace, they had to walk 3 kilometres so as to arrive to the slave ship. You will arrive to the famous “Portal of never-comeback”, through which the slaves had to walk before boarding the ship. After having these terrible stories, you will probably need to unwind. A lazing moment on the beach of Ouidah will be an ideal way to do so. Your dinner will be served at the hotel Diaspora.

Day 7:
After breakfast, the minibus will take you to the border!
End of the tour.

Although a small country, Benin has much to offer. Added to an authentic taste of African bush country, there are a whole range of natural and human curiosities to be found and they can all be characterized by one simple word: charm.

Day 1:

You will visit the museum Honmé, ex-royal building: after the tour through this huge structure, the everyday life of the royal family including their voodoo practices won’t be a secret for you anymore. You will take refreshing air in the botanical garden in a very nice atmosphere of tropical vegetation, animal species and statues symbolising the divinatory science called Fâ.An impressive project, the Center Songhaï, which realises the production, transformation and sale of biological products with the objective of sustainable development, will be presented to you during the visit of the farm. A part of the products are used in the restaurant of the hotel, so for your dinner as well! Night in the hotel of the Songhaï Center.

Trip to kpalimè, installation in Kloto, JB Nectar Hotel. Small trek on the mount Kloto (mountain which gives its name to the area) Lunch in the hotel. P.M: Tour of the village of Kouma-Konda and visit of the Castle Viale (historical site and superb panoramic view on the whole region) Diner followed by an African evening. Night at the hotel.

Day 9:
Breakfast in the hotel JB Nectar. Guided and informative walk across the forest and the fields of coffee and cacao
Research of pigments for plant painting. Lunch by the river side and swimming. P.M: Demonstration and introduction of vegetal painting. Diner and night in the hotel.

Day 10:
After breakfast, the minibus will take you to the border!
End of the tour.
